Your Houseplants Aren’t Dormant: What Really Changes in Winter

Every winter, I hear the same explanation when a houseplant slows down, stops producing leaves, or begins looking a little less impressive: “It’s going dormant.”

For the overwhelming majority of the tropical plants we grow inside our homes, that simply isn’t true.

There are plants that experience a true dormancy. Venus flytraps are a familiar example. They come from a temperate climate where seasonal changes in temperature and daylight trigger a genuine resting period. But your pothos, Philodendron, Monstera, or Alocasia are not automatically entering dormancy just because it’s December.

What you are probably seeing is a response to less light.


Where Houseplants Come From Matters


Most of the plants we call “houseplants” originate in tropical or subtropical regions, many of them near the equator. The closer you get to the equator, the less dramatic the seasonal changes become. Day length stays relatively consistent throughout the year, and temperatures do not swing from warm summers to freezing winters the way they do in much of the United States.

Those changes in temperature and photoperiod(the number of light hours in a day) are two of the primary environmental signals that can induce true seasonal dormancy. In the natural habitats of most tropical houseplants, there simply is not enough variation in those signals to create the kind of winter dormancy we associate with temperate outdoor plants.

That includes Alocasia. You will often hear that Alocasia “go dormant” in winter, but the popular Alocasia we grow as houseplants do not have to shut down for the season. If one stops growing or loses leaves indoors, it is more likely responding to reduced light, watering problems, or another form of stress. A slowdown is not the same thing as dormancy, and leaf loss does not automatically prove that a plant has entered one.


Why Growth Slows Down


Unless you are using a grow light, your plants receive fewer hours of usable light as we move deeper into winter. This happens even if you live in Florida, Southern California, Texas, or another part of the country that stays relatively warm. Your winter may not feel very cold, but the days are still shorter.

Light supplies the energy a plant uses to grow and carry out its normal processes. When less energy is available, growth often slows. A plant may produce smaller leaves, take longer between new leaves, or appear to stop growing altogether. That does not mean it has flipped into a dormant state. It means the conditions in your home are no longer supporting the same rate of growth they did during spring or summer.

If you want to maintain more consistent growth, a grow light can help replace some of those missing hours. You can also reevaluate placement. A plant that was receiving enough light several feet from a window in June may need to move closer to that window in December. Just watch for cold glass and drafts before relocating it.


Why Your Watering Interval Changes


This is also why I never recommend watering houseplants on a fixed schedule.

Plants do not dry out every Saturday just because Saturday is your watering day. Drying time depends on the amount and duration of light, temperature, humidity, airflow, soil composition, pot size, root development, and the individual plant. Those variables can differ enormously from one home to another-and they can change within the same home as the seasons change.

Think of your plant as a restaurant and light as its operating hours. Water is like the food stocked in the kitchen. During summer, the restaurant is open longer, serves more customers, and moves through its ingredients quickly. In winter, it is open for fewer hours and receives fewer orders, so that same supply lasts much longer. If you keep restocking the kitchen at the summer rate, food begins piling up before the restaurant can use it.

That is essentially what happens when we keep watering at a summer frequency after the available light has decreased. The plant is using water more slowly, the soil remains wet longer, and the roots spend more time without the oxygen they need. That creates conditions where root rot becomes much more likely.

The answer is not to pick a new “winter schedule.” Check the soil and water according to the plant’s actual dryness requirement. The method stays the same; the interval between waterings changes naturally.

Humidity, Heat, and Cold Drafts

Winter can also make the air inside our homes much drier. Central heating systems and fireplaces warm the air and reduce indoor humidity, which may contribute to crispy leaf edges,especially on plants that prefer higher humidity.

This can also change how quickly your soil dries. Although reduced daylight often causes plants to use water more slowly, the warmth and dry air produced by central heat or a fireplace can pull moisture from the soil more quickly. If you live in a colder climate where the heat runs frequently, you may actually find that some of your plants need to be watered more often-not less.

This is exactly why we never make watering decisions based solely on the season. Do not assume every plant needs less water in winter, but do not assume dry indoor air automatically means the roots need water, either. Always check the soil and water only when that particular plant has reached its recommended level of dryness.

Placement matters here, too. Keep sensitive plants away from heating vents, fireplaces, and exterior doors that repeatedly expose them to drafts. A bright window can be valuable in winter, but leaves touching very cold glass may suffer damage. You are looking for the best balance of usable light and stable temperature—not simply the warmest or brightest-looking spot in the room.


Should You Fertilize in Winter?


Fertilizer supports growth; it does not create the light energy required for growth. When winter brings fewer hours of light, a plant has less opportunity to use the nutrients you provide. Continuing to fertilize at the same concentration can allow unused mineral salts to accumulate in the soil, eventually damaging roots and causing fertilizer burn.

If you use a liquid fertilizer during winter, dilute it more heavily than you would during periods of stronger light and active growth. You are giving the plant a weaker concentration rather than forcing it to process a full summer dose with a reduced winter energy budget.

Slow-release fertilizer is generally less concerning because it supplies nutrients in very small amounts over time. As always, the plant’s conditions and rate of growth matter more than the date on the calendar.


A Simple Winter Houseplant Checklist

● Do not assume slower growth means dormancy.

● Expect reduced daylight to slow water use, but remember that central heat and fireplaces may make soil dry faster.

● Check the soil instead of watering according to the calendar.

● Move plants closer to a window if needed, but protect them from cold glass and drafts.

● Consider a grow light if you want to maintain more consistent growth.

● Keep plants away from heating vents, fireplaces, and frequently opened exterior doors.

● Do not try to correct dry air by keeping the soil wetter.

● Dilute liquid fertilizer more heavily when light and growth decrease.

● Continue using slow-release fertilizer reasonably; it already releases nutrients in small amounts.


Most importantly, do not panic if your houseplants grow more slowly in winter. Slower growth is a logical response to reduced light—not evidence that every tropical plant in your home has entered dormancy. Adjust the care you provide to the conditions the plant is experiencing, and let the soil, light, and growth tell you what it needs.

Your plant is not asleep. It is simply working with a shorter day.
